What is Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery is a term which many of us are familiar with, but what exactly is it? And what reasons are there for choosing to have plastic surgery?

Plastic surgery, or cosmetic surgery, consists of a number of surgical procedures which can have either medical or aesthetic benefits. Typically, plastic surgery is associated with procedures such as breast enlargement and liposuction which are designed to enhance the physical appearance of the individual.

Plastic surgery, however, can have a range of other uses and there are a number of procedures which are performed for medical benefits. Breast reductions can help to relieve back and neck strain from those with larger breasts, improving both fitness and confidence in the process.

Reconstructive surgery is also a form of plastic surgery. This is designed to restore certain features of a physical appearance following drastic changes. This can be anything from facial reconstruction following a severe accident or even breast reconstruction following a single or double mastectomy.

Cosmetic surgery, or plastic surgery, is chosen by a number of men and women in order to alter and enhance their appearances. This is because a lot of people draw confidence from how they feel about their physical appearance. If people are unhappy with how they look then they can become reluctant to socialise or interact with others.

Opting for cosmetic or plastic surgery is therefore a great way for them to alter certain aspects of their physical feature and improve their confidence. Plastic surgery does not always relate to large procedures but can include smaller operations such as nose jobs (medically termed rhinoplasty).

Plastic surgery is not only conducted in order to allow people to have the physical features they desire but can also have medical causes. People with a deviated septum can suffer from difficulty breathing however a simple cosmetic procedure can help to correct the problem. This procedure would not alter the physical appearance of the individual but could still be classed as a form of plastic surgery.

Other examples of this include the reconstruction of joints or features following severe accidents. These procedures are not only conducted in order to alter the physical appearance but can mean that joints and features are reconstructed to enable the individual to continue with a normal life. The reconstruction of joints can save people from having to have amputations.

As a form of surgery, plastic surgery will have certain risks attached to it but these are not drastically higher than any other form of surgery. Most procedures will have some side effects but these are usually quite mild. The side effects include soreness and tenderness on the affected areas, swelling and bruising, some slight pain and discomfort as well as some restricted movement.

These side effects are present immediately after the surgical procedure and can take a while to fully clear. The exact time will depend on how quickly the individual heals as well as the type of procedure which they had: more evasive procedures will take a longer time to heal.
