UB40 star Robin Campbell avoids bankruptcy

A FOUNDING member of Birmingham music legends UB40 has avoided bankruptcy – despite all but one of his bandmates going bust.

Last month we told how five of the original line-up were officially declared broke at two separate county court hearings.

They are former lead singer Ali Campbell, sax player Brian Travers, drummer Jimmy Brown, trumpeter Terence Oswald and percussionist Norman Hassan.

This was despite the world famous reggae group selling 70 million records in a glittering three-decade career. Now it has emerged guitarist Robin Campbell, 56, has avoided bankruptcy after striking a deal with creditors over his debts.

A seventh group member – keyboard player Mickey Virtue, 54, – has never been part of the bankruptcy case.

Marks Sands is a spokesman for RSM Tenon, the financial firm handling the bankruptcy.

“Robin and Mickey are not bankrupt,” he told the Sunday Mercury.

“I understand Robin has done some sort of deal as part of the proceedings, so no longer owes any money.

‘‘This could be something like re-mortgaging his house.

“Mickey is different, he has never been involved from the outset.”
