AN astonishing 1,400 Midland motorists have allowed to carry on driving – despite clocking up 12 penalty points or more on their licences.
The road menaces had faced automatic bans but used a legal loophole to escape disqualification, or managed to convince magistrates to allow them to get back behind the wheel.
The shock statistics, released by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, have been attacked by road safety charity Brake.
Spokesman Richard Coteau said: “It’s outrageous that these individuals, who rack up offence after offence, are allowed to continue driving, causing enormous risk to the public.
“Drivers who repeatedly flout traffic laws have shown complete disregard for the lives of other road users.
“They have had ample opportunity to desist breaking the law before reaching 12 points and facing disqualification.
