Child assault claim at Birmingham nursery

A BIRMINGHAM nursery is at the centre of a child protection probe after an allegation of assault was made against a staff member.

Police are also looking into a separate theft accusation involving a former employee of Alexandra House Nursery in Handsworth.

One female staff member has been suspended while Birmingham City Council investigates the child protection matter.

A witness has claimed they saw a worker pull a child by their arm, although the youngster at the centre of the allegation is still attending the centre.

Nursery director Nicollette Walker confirmed: “A member of staff has been suspended after an allegation of assault.

‘‘We take all matters seriously and are working with the agency to resolve the matter.”

She added: “The member of staff is fully qualified to the required NVQ Level 3 and has been working for the nursery for nine years. All our staff are trained in safeguarding the children.

“There have never been any allegations about her conduct before. However, all nurseries have to prioritise regarding any matters of this nature.

“I think, however, this incident will be resolved swiftly. The child in question is still attending the nursery.”
