Arrests during EDL protest in Warwickshire

POLICE arrested four protesters during an English Defence League march in a Midland town yesterday.

Many stores in Nuneaton shut up shop because of the protest, despite it being one of the busiest days of the years in the run-up to Christmas.

Warwickshire Police said the arrests included a 21 year-old man, from Nottingham, on suspicion of robbery, and a 42 year-old man, from Barnsley, on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

A 17-year-old youth from Nuneaton was also arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a bladed article, while a 23 year-old man, also from the town, was arrested for a public order offence.

The EDL, which had expected 1,500 to protest, said it was visiting Nuneaton because it has the UK’s first Sharia Court.

The group also held a simultaneous demonstration in Preston city centre.
