THE sun shone brightly for the Sunday Mercury’s Wonderkids as they were honoured for their courage and compassion yesterday.

All 10 youngsters, who were nominated to win the coveted title, as well as two Wondergroups, enjoyed a magnificent day out at Drayton Manor Theme Park, in Tamworth, Staffordshire, with their families.

They were especially invited to the day – supported by Legal & General, Drayton Manor and Heart FM – in recognition of their courage in the face of adversity.

Some had battled illness, some had offered enormous support to members of their family, or even strangers in their time of need, and others had shown tremendous strength and determination.

And they all had a fabulous time.

But there was barely a dry eye in the room during the award ceremony lunch hosted by Heart FM’s Ed James and Rachel New at the start of the day.

Each child’s story was reported as they received their award and got the chance to meet one another.

Ellis Wilde, Summer’s dad, said: “We’ve really enjoyed it. I thought Summer might be nervous to go on stage at first, but she did really well.”

And Yvette Donald, Mollie’s mum, said: “We’ve had a great day. When you hear some of the stories of some of the families you wonder how they do it.”

After lunch everyone headed for the theme park.

The older ones headed for the resort’s exciting thrill-seeker rides as the younger ones made their way for fun in to Thomas Land.

The youngsters from the BASIL Group said they had enjoyed the Maelstrom ride, in particular.

Sarah Caines, from Legal & General, said: “We are thrilled to support such an amazing event. And we are happy as a local employer to be able to make a difference to our community.”
