Elderly couple rescued from Castle Bromwich M6 crash

An elderly couple have been taken to hospital after a motorway crash in Birmingham.

The collision, on the northbound M6 between junctions four and five, near Castle Bromwich, at 6.15am on Thursday, caused severe traffic delays.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "When crew arrived they found one car on its roof, a second car with front end damage and an HGV which had stopped nearby.

"The elderly woman in the overturned car was trapped for around 40 minutes. She had suffered a very severe arm injury. After being freed from the car she was taken on blue lights to the Regional Trauma Centre at Selly Oak Hospital where she was likely to need emergency surgery.

"The man in car was also trapped. However, once the door was opened by firefighters he was able to get out of the vehicle himself. He has also been taken to Selly Oak as a precaution with minor injuries.

"The man in the second car was shaken but uninjured. There were no other injuries.

"The crash has caused severe delays on the motorway."
