A Birmingham teenager struck by lightning at the weekend has died in hospital.

The Birmingham and Solihull Coroners office was today informed that Mohammed Junaid Hussain had died and an inquest is expected to be opened into his death tomorrow.

The 17-year-old youth from Small Heath was hit by a lightning bolt as he sheltered under a tree with friends after being caught in Saturday’s torrential storms while playing cricket in Small Heath Park. He was taken to Selly Oak hospital in a serious condition.

He had been receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest and serious burns. Five of his friends, who were also caught up in the lightning bolt are said to be in a “stable but well” condition.
