“For reasons which are not clear, after a very short time the Toyota collided with the central pillar of the viaduct at Butlers Leap.
“No other vehicles were involved.”
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “The driver of the car suffered a serious head injury in the crash.
“Crews immediately commenced emergency treatment on scene before transferring him on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry, where medics were on standby.
“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and hospital staff nothing could be done to save the teenager and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital.”
The case has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which investigates all fatal crashes involving police vehicles.
Local convenience store manager Mr Dattani, 50, said the Police had asked for CCTV footage from the front of his shop, which is just 200 yards from the viaduct.
“There is a takeaway next door, but we weren’t open at that time of the morning,” he said.
“It’s normally a very quiet area, no thefts or anything like that.”
Anyone with information about the crash should contact Warwickshire Police on 01926 415000.
