THE MPs expenses scandal has highlighted the importance of a free and enquiring press.
For a month the Daily Telegraph probed the nooks and crannies of crumpled receipts before the Government published its own, heavily censored, version of what our dishonourable members had been claiming.
Without the courage and determination of the Telegraph’s editorial team, we might never have known the extent of the feeding frenzy by MPs snuffling at the trough of taxpayers’ hard-earned money.
The Sunday Mercury is no stranger to fearless investigative journalism, either – a fact recognised at last week’s prestigious Midland Media Awards, where we were named Newspaper of the Year.
Judges of the competition praised the Mercury’s “crusading spirit, cussed persistence and sheer determination”, adding that we were “consistently able to come up with the rattling good exclusive.”
Among the stories they singled out were the exposé of abuse in a children’s home, our probe into the death of tragic Khyra Ishaq and the investigation into how an entire village was ripped off by credit card conmen.
The judges described our journalists as exceptional and inventive, passionate and enthusiastic in their quest to uncover wrongdoing and fight for justice.
