He said: “Social networking sites are great but they never provide privacy by default, you have to set it up yourself.

‘‘So my advice to the children would be to treat it like crossing the road, to make sure they look both ways and cover themselves.

“As part of my job I trawl through websites like Facebook and sometimes I am appalled by the amount of information people give away.

“I remember one young girl telling everyone her parents would not be home one night and realising that anyone with the wrong intentions could easily take advantage of that.

“There are people out there who make it their job to harvest information from these websites for their own purposes and people must be more careful.”

Mr Gibson’s talk will be video conferenced to a number of schools in the city and will also be streamed live across the internet, as well as being available for download later.

The children involved will have the chance to debate the issues surrounding internet safety as well as learning some important internet safety skills.
