A spokesman for West Midlands Police refused to comment on the Woolworths policy and said it was a matter for trading standards.

A spokeswoman for Birmingham Trading Standards said: “It is up to the individual retailers and they are doing nothing wrong by imposing restrictions.

“We have had no complaints about the policy with this particular store and it really is up to them.”

Bosses at Woolworths were unavailable for comment.
