Class size was no barrier for me

I READ with interest your article in the Sunday Mercury headlined "Crowded Out".

I see that classes with over 30 pupils are illegal and detrimental to a good education, vital for a well-paid fulfilling career and a happy life.

I am now approaching my 66th birthday and set out in life in an infants school class with 50 kids in it.

In junior school in 1951 my class was down to 47 pupils but by 1954 had risen to 49.

Despite this so-called handicap, I achieved all the above goals in life.

While I understand teaching methods have altered over the years, it appears that as class sizes have reduced, so has respect and discipline in the classroom.
