Wolves: Stars will stay says Mick Mccarthy

MICK McCarthy believes Premier League survival will allow Wolves to keep hold of their star players.

Kevin Doyle and Matt Jarvis are likely to have been coveted by other clubs if Wolves had dropped into the Championship.

But McCarthy said: “There’s nobody can knock on my door and say ‘I want Premier League football’ because they will be getting it here next season.

“That’s the first port of call if anyobody wants a move: ‘Gaffer, I want to play in the Premier League’.

“Well, that’s messed that one up. No-one can come and give me that one, so that’s a real good positive start.

“If we weren’t in the Premier League a lot of players might want to leave.”

McCarthy revealed that both he and the players would have taken salary cuts in the Championship.

“If we are not in the Premier League they’d all be a lot worse off because there’d be salary cuts, which is normal,” he added.

“I would have been the same, I would have been cut, I accept that.

‘‘If you’re not in the Premier League you don’t get Premier League dough. You have to earn it. The headline can be ‘stars to be sold’ but if so that’s just bull, it’s nonsense. But if Arsenal came in for Jarvis and offered, or Man City came in for somebody and offered, or Man United came in and offered.

“Yes we could dig our heels in and say ‘you are not going’ then they are going to resent me for the rest of their lives and they are not going to play for me.
