RETIRING goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan has backed Albion keeper Dean Kiely to take over from him at the end of the season, and has personally recommended the Republic of Ireland international to manager Tony Mowbray.
Corrigan, who will be involved in his last game today at Blackburn Rovers, believes 38-year-old Kiely is the perfect man to take on his role of overseeing the development of Scott Carson and the club’s other young keepers.
Kiely has had to play back-up to Carson for most of the season, but Corrigan said the rivals had a superb, supportive relationship, and he feels Kiely could continue to play as well as coach.
Mowbray has refused to discuss the possibility of Kiely taking up the role until the end of the season but he is sure to be a prime candidate to become Corrigan’s successor.
“I have put Dean’s name forward but it depends on what Dean wants to do,” said Corrigan.
“I rate him as a goalkeeper and I know his capabilities as a coach.
“He has helped me tremendously during his time at the club.
“Having talked with him and worked with him, I know he would like to go in that direction.
