Birmingham City need to recruit - Lee Carsley

Lee Carsley

DEPARTING Lee Carsley has urged Birmingham City not to let this season go to waste by failing to build on a successful first stint back in the Premier League.

Carsley was afforded stoppage time as a substitute to make a farewell bow to St Andrew’s in the 2-1 win over Burnley.

The Brummie, who began the season as captain, has announced he will be leaving at the campaign’s end on a free transfer.

And after an emotional swansong, Carsley re-flected on a job well done in 2009-10 – and the season previously.

“I came here with a plan,” said Carsley, who joined on a Bosman from Everton two summers ago after Blues were relegated. “I feel I’ve achieved what I set out to do – help get the club back into the Premier League and keep it there.

“It’s just important now that the investment is there. Recruitment is going to be vital. If the board think we are going to finish ninth or tenth with the same players then they are going to have to think again – drastically – because this needs improving, badly.
