A BIRMINGHAM University student has been found dead in a lecture hall after apparently committing suicide.
The body of Mohammed Abdelmohsin Omer, 29, from Sudan, was discovered by fellow students who were attending a lecture in the Gisbert Kapp building of the campus in Edgbaston. Paramedics pronounced the scholar dead at the scene at 9.45am on Monday. It is thought he had hanged himself.
Last night, a student at the university, who did not wish to be named, told the Sunday Mercury: “Everyone is really shocked by what has happened. The campus was crawling with police on Monday.
“I have been told that he did it in the lecture room so that he could be found by those he was studying with. No-one really knows why he did it though.
“I didn’t know the man but it’s such a waste of life. Nothing like this has happened while I’ve been studying at the university.”
Another student added: “There are quite a few rumours flying around about how the student was found but the university hasn’t said anything to the students about the death.
“I find that surprising, given the presence of the police for a long part of the day.
“We are really shocked by what has happened. It must have been awful for the students who found him.” A University of Birmingham spokeswoman last night confirmed the death.
