“WE’RE not freaks, we’re beautiful women,” said Delilah, who used to be known as Barry, in the world’s first transsexual pageant. That’s not quite true – some of those featured in the Channel 4 doc Tears, Tiaras and Transsexuals were far from pretty, with their hideous frocks and heavy make-up. Becoming a woman doesn’t give you good taste.
The pageant winner, Mimi, did look just like a woman, apart from her Jimmy Hill chin and the use of duct tape to hold in her male bits. This was a touching and funny film, but far too long – and why start showing it at 11.10pm?
