LONG DISTANCE CALLING
Avoid The Light (Superball)
wGERMAN band Long Distance Calling manage to marry the prog-rock of Pink Floyd with the machine metal of Metallica in lengthy instrumental compositions. It’s exemplified by Apparitions, a 12-minute wander through ambient electronica, classic rock and metal, then back again. Black Paper Planes is more immediate with raw rock guitar riff and tumbling drums, and I Know You Stanley Milgram nods to James Hetfield & Co. The impressive album only goes awry when Katatonia frontman Jonas Renkse adds guest vocals to The Nearing Grave. PC
