wAUSTRALIA (12) is only Baz Luhrmann’s fourth film in 16 years, so hopes were high for his first movie since Moulin Rouge. Sadly, he failed to produce something magical, although there are plenty of reasons to watch Australia, notably the stunning locations and two star leads with charisma. Nicole Kidman plays a haughty aristocrat who arrives at the family’s remote cattle station in 1939 to discover her husband dead. Thanks to drover Hugh Jackman, she rounds up the cattle, takes on baddie Bryan Brown and falls in love, with an Aboriginal boy and her ruggedly handsome drover. Read

wTHE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (12) is an update of a 1951 film about aliens who arrive on Earth to save the planet from ecological disaster. Keanu Reeves is the extraterrestrial Klaatu, helped in his mission by astrobiologist Jennifer Connelly. The special effects are often impressive and it’s a lot less violent than other films with his certificate, but it’s rather flat and heavy-going. Some might say Keanu’s wooden style of acting is perfect for playing an emotionless alien. Read
