Baby Mama (12A)

Baby Mama

HIGH-flying businesswoman Kate Holbrook (Tina Fey) has a new promotion and a great Philadelphia apartment, but all she wants is a baby.

The obstacles are that she’s 37 and single, then she discovers her funny-shaped uterus gives her a one-in-a-million chance of getting pregnant.

She decides to pay a surrogate to carry her child, arranging it through Sigourney Weaver at the huge cost of $100,000.

“It costs more to have someone born than someone killed,” exclaims Kate, who’s given the explanation that it takes longer.

She picks likeable but chavvy Angie (Amy Poehler), whose boyfriend Carl (Dax Shepard) is a selfish layabout. It’s highly unlikely she would spend so much money on such an unsuitable candidate, but it’s rich with comic potential.

Pony-tailed Steve Martin is hilarious as her new age boss with a huge ego. Also popping up in the good cast are Greg Kinnear as the love interest and Maura Tierney as Kate’s sister.

Baby Mama is a well-conceived comedy that delivers plenty of laugh-out-loud lines.
