wGRAN TORINO (15) is a triumph for Clint Eastwood, who both directs and stars as the ultimate grumpy old man, Korean war veteran and widower Walt. His area is being taken over by south-east Asians and he’s unashamedly racist towards them, until events lead to him bonding with his neighbours. With wonderful dialogue, delivered with relish, this is smart, funny and shocking. Read

wVICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (12) is the film which netted Penelope Cruz (pictured) an Oscar. It’s a very sexy film, starring good-looking Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall and Javier Bardem, who end up having a complicated love life one summer in Barcelona. Vicky (Hall) and Cristina (Johansson) are American friends who travel to the Spanish city and both fall for fiery artist Bardem, who’s also still involved with his passionate ex-wife Cruz. Woody Allen’s film looks gorgeous and there are some witty moments, but the story peters out. Read
