HTHE second series of Downton Abbey may not be quite such a wonderful treat as the first, but it is still required Sunday night viewing.
The main problem is that it’s now the First World War and a time of austerity, so there aren’t as many lovely hats and frocks about. It’s all much more bleak.
Thank goodness for Maggie Smith’s dry one liners.
Last week we had: “It’s like living in a second-rate hotel where the guests keep arriving and no-one seems to leave.”
But the best was: “God knows who the next heir will be. Probably a chimney sweep from Solihull.”
Horrors!
